Ooty, the erstwhile summer resort of the British, is situated in the state of Tamil Nadu. Located on the Nilgiri Hills, Ooty is a favourite hill station for tourists. The earlier inhabitants of the blue mountain were Toda tribes and later Ooty was under the control of the British. The official name of Ooty was Udhagamandalam. The British changed the name Udhagamandalam to Ootacamund and later to Ooty. Ooty, the former capital of the Nilgiri district, has picture perfect scenery, nice climate and the green valleys that attract the tourists from all over the country and from abroad also. Ooty is fondly called the ‘Queen of Hill Stations’ by the British.
Perched at an altitude of 2286 m, the city of Ooty is a haven for various flowers and trees. A famous Kurinji flower, blue in colour, blossoms once in twelve years here. The Botanical Garden of Ooty, established in 1847, is a very important place to visit for the tourists as well as for the students. One of the important events in the botanical garden of Ooty is the flower and fruit show that organized annually. There are around more than 150 species of flowers exhibit in this show. Ooty Rose Show in Government Rose Park is also another attraction to promote the tourism in Ooty.
The mountain train journey from Kallar on a ratchet is very adventurous as well as enjoyable. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is one of the oldest railways in the country and it can find a place in the Unesco World Heritage site. The train covers many curves, tunnels and sprawling tea gardens. The tea plantations in the city of Ooty are very attractive and the Nilgiri tea is very famous in the market. The Tea and Tourism Festival, which attracts a lot of tourists to Ooty, is organized annually. Besides the tea plantations, Eucalyptus and Pine trees add charm to the city of Ooty. Apart from tourism, the revenue of Ooty depends on Tea and Eucalyptus as well.
Some of the other attractions in and around the city of Ooty which include in the Ooty Packages are Tiger Hill, Ooty Lake, Doddabetta Peak, Sim’s Park, Catherine Falls and Hidden Valley among others. Tiger Hill is situated at a distance of 15 km from the city of Ooty. Ooty Lake is in the heart of the city and boats are available to enjoy the charm of the lake. The photographers have a great time on Doddabetta Peak as this peak holds a fantastic view around.The nearest airport to Ooty is Coimbatore at a distance of 105 km away. The railway station near to Ooty is Mettuppalayam at a distance of 45 km from the town.
