GRAVITY SUCKS – SPACE PENS DON’T
Have you heard the one about the design challenge facing the Soviet and the US engineers during the space race of the 1960s.They needed to come up with something that could write in the zero-gravity capsule.The NASA engineers spent millions on developing a special ‘astronaut’ pen whilst the Soviets spent nothing, and used a pencil to achieve the same result.
Being economical with the truth does get in the way of a good story?Much as we’d like it to be true, the story is only a myth but it does go to show how writing instruments are an essential part of our lives – even for astronauts.
The true story – according to myth busting website, Snopes.com, both nations initially used pencils but the broken leads pozed a hazard floating around in the zero gravity capsule.
The founder of the Fisher pen company, engineer Paul Fisher, saw an opportunity when he realised that astronauts needed something safer which could operate under extreme conditions. He spent two years and over a million dollars before developing his first successful pressurized ball pen made entirely from metal.In 1965, he sent some samples to NASA at the Houston Space Centre where they were tested thoroughly.
Since then, the Space Pens have been used on all manned space flights, both American and Russian.Contrary to the legend – Fisher didn’t charge the government for development costs – he paid for it all.What he did do however, was sell 400 Fisher Space Pens to NASA for $2.95 each !
Space walkers need pens and so do we.Even with telecommunications advancing so rapidly, we still use pens every day for a whole host of things, from signing credit card slips and filling in forms to scribbling down notes or addressing an envelope.And all those people whose jobs require customers’ signatures, they will universally complain that their pens keep going missing! Bank tellers, secretaries, shop assistants, couriers etc are all plagued with disappearing pens.The truth is – pens are both functional and desirable.
That’s why they are the most popular promotional products chosen by organisations. Promotional pens are available in many interesting styles and colours, suitable for any budget, and include rollerballs and ballpoints, stick, click and twist pens, markers and highlighters, multifunction, novelty and stylus pens for the digitally inclined.
These can be imprinted with an organisation’s logo or strapline etc. Depending on budget, branded packaging can also be arranged which gives promotional pens added appeal.
The pens of today are a far cry from the days of Ancient Egypt 3000 years ago, where hollow reeds containing pigment were first used.Did a man in ancient times, painting hieroglypics, ever imagine it was possible for humans to progress into space ?And the basic tool he held in his hand for drawing was the precursor to one of life’s most well-used and essential daily items ?
Most of us probably use a pen at least once daily, which is why so many organisations opt for pens as their promotional product of choice.
