Ciudad Del Este – City Or Shopping Mall?
Paraguay is not on the itinerary of most travelers visiting South America. There are many reasons for this, none of which implies that there isn’t much to see. If you are therefore planning a visit to Brazil, Argentina or Uruguay, a side-trip to Paraguay won’t cost much and you will have an amazingly good time.
Many travelers visit the Iguazu Falls on the border of Brazil and Paraguay and then bring a quick visit to Ciudad de Este. This is often their one and only encounter with Paraguay.
If you are looking for history and atmosphere, rather go to the capital Asuncion. If you are into shopping though, Ciudad de Este will not disappoint you. This noisy, crowded city is for all intents and purposes a massive shopping mall. If you are a jewelry retails who came here to find a fine jewelry wholesale distributor, you are in luck: there are a number of them in the biggest mall not far from the border post.
You can also buy musical instruments of all colors and credentials. If you are looking for a cheap electronic keyboard from China, you will certainly find it. And if you want to buy a state of the art epiphone electric guitar there’s more than one shop offering this as well. Check prices for these items in your home country and on the Internet before going to Ciudad de Este, so that you will know when you are seeing a bargain.
For the family man, there’s a little bit of everything. You can buy lovely semi-precious jewelry for the wife at reasonable prices. For the children you will no doubt find something in one of the numerous stores selling toys and sports good. And for the baby, what about a brand new baby bath, maybe one of the new spa types where you can bathe your baby in the upright position?
Ciudad del Este is of course situated on the border with Brazil, so while you are there it’s easy to visit the Itaipu dam. This huge mass of water is the largest hydroelectric scheme in the world. Once you have paid for your tickets, you will first watch a very interesting movie about the history of the dam and how it was constructed.
You can actually take a guided tour right into the dam wall. To see one of the huge turbines from close up is quite an experience. During the rainy season they often open the sluice gates to stop the dam from overflowing. To watch this is like standing at the foot of a massive waterfall – be prepared to get wet, even though the lookout point is quite some distance from the water.
